Can’t fucking please you guys, can I? I make a post about ‘him’ and get “OMG NOT EVERYONE IS STRAIGHT!!!!!!!” asks, so I make a gender-neutral post with ‘them’ and get “LOL THEM AS IN MULTIPLE PEOPLE?! STUUUUUPID” asks 
No, not ‘them’ as in multiple people
‘them’ as in a gender-neutral singular third-person pronoun, the way it is often used because English doesn’t have an official gender-neutral singular third-person pronoun, so its speakers came up with one to fit their needs
